Gold Country / Country Gold

by Secret Emchy Society

/
  • Record/Vinyl + Digital Album

Another gem from the first lady of queer country. Pressed on ebony wax.

"Gold Country ~ Country Gold from Secret Emchy Society is brilliant, delicate, and fucking hilarious. If you think Emchy is a country singer, she is. If you think she’s a poet, she is. The breadth and depth of her lyrics are astonishing. The album itself revolves around how people pull together and come apart, it’s about being human and the rollercoaster that involves. She evokes dramatic mood swings throughout the entire release, from lost love, to the pandemic, to fucking and drinking whiskey all on the same album.”
    - Patrick Haggerty, Lavender Country

"With their gorgeous new album, "Gold Country ~ Country Gold", Secret Emchy Society finds honkytonk’s rollicking queer heart."
    - Karen Pittelman (Karen & the Sorrows)

Cowboys Are Frequently Secretly Fond of Each Other Words & music Ned Sublette There's many a strange impulse out on the plains of West Texas And there's many a young boy who feels things he can't comprehend A small town don't like it when somebody falls between sexes A small town don't like it when a cowboy has feelings for men Well I believe in my soul that inside every man there's a feminine And inside every lady there's a deep manly voice loud and clear A cowboy may brag about things that he's done with his women But the ones who brag loudest are the ones who are most likely queer Cowboys are frequently secretly fond of each other Say what do you think all them saddles and boots were about There's many a cowboy don't know how he feels for his brother And inside every cowboy there's a lady who'd love to slip out There's always somebody who says what the others just whisper And mostly that someone's the first one to get shot down dead So when you talk to a cowboy don't treat him like he was a sister You can't f*ck with a lady who’s sleepin' in each cowboy's head Cowboys are frequently secretly fond of each other Say what do you think all them saddles and boots were about there's many a cowboy don't know how he feels for his brother And inside every cowboy there's a lady who'd love to slip out And inside every cowboy there's a lady who'd love to slip out And inside every dagger there’s a dagger who’d love to swagger out Inside all us cowfolks there’s queers waiting to come out

Another Time & Place Words & music Cindy Emch 2020 Days in September, I wish you were here With a case of sangria and those good bad ideas Swimming out in the water, under mountain starlight Songs, fire, and laughter goin’ all through the night But we’re farther apart than we’re used to Even when we’re face to face Wish I could just Touch your hand But that’s another time and place That’s another time and place Driving through the fire, dreaming through the trees White-knucklin’ through the mountains make it home before the freeze The road sings a swan song, the guitar it screams All those good people now are falling to their knees But we’re farther apart than we’re used to Even when we’re face to face Wish I could just Touch your hand But that’s another time and place That’s another time and place My heart burns like a star for you This time is carving a scar for two and I haven't hugged a friend in twelve months time Small screens of living are all we got left And I hold your sweet laughter right close to my chest The phone rings no answer all through the night It’s just me and the forest leaving all of this behind But we’re farther apart than we’re used to Even when we’re face to face Wish I could just Touch your hand But that’s another time and place That’s another time and place

- Patrick Haggerty (Lavender Country)

"In a world of frat dudes singing about Applebees, Gold Country ~ Country Gold is a welcome middle finger to modern country, offering up a brand of smoke-filled honky-tonk that's traditional as they come -- albeit delivered with a fiery, punk disposition. Also 'Think I Do' is the jam"
- Cory "Round Up" Graves (Vandoliers).

"With their gorgeous new album, "Gold Country ~ Country Gold", Secret Emchy Society finds honky-tonk’s rollicking queer heart."
- Karen Pittelman (Karen & the Sorrows)

"The album is so wonderful - giving a real Mad Max in Silverado vibe..."
- Jake Blount (Award-winning musician / Board Member Bluegrass Pride)

"With "Gold Country...", Cindy Emch further cements herself as the undisputed queen of California queer country twang. Some of the songs are deeply present as if she were in the room with you yesterday, and some of them sound gritty, like they were recorded in 1952 right after a Hank Williams session. Put all together, it’s the kind of record that you can’t skip a single song, full of all the emotion from the last two years of living in a very changed America."
- Mya Byrne (singer/songwriter)

SECRET EMCHY SOCIETY 'GOLD COUNTRY/COUNTRY GOLD VINYL' (BROKEN CLOVER RECORDS/USA IMPORT)

SECRET EMCHY SOCIETY is formed around American singer/songwriter/guitarist CINDY EMCHY, and under this moniker she has already released a couple of records. Gold Country/Country Gold is the 4th album as SECRET EMCHY SOCIETY, which musically speaking is described as acoustic gypsy punk, Americana, ghost town country, murder ballads, and drinking songs. Acoustic bluesy country might also be a good way to describe the music, and thanks to the strong vocals of Cindy it is a pleasure to listen to the 13 songs on the new album. Additional musicians are Terri Upton (Backing Vocals), Tolan McNeil (Backing Vocals, Lead Guitar), Mya Byrne (Backing Vocals, Mandolin), Michele Kappel (Backing Vocals, Percussion), Carolyn Mark (Backing Vocals, Piano), Hank Pine (Cello), Dennis Siemens (Double Bass [Upright Bass]), Hans Winold ((Double Bass [Upright Bass]), Marc Atkinson (Drums, Bass, Lead Guitar), Sean Malroy (Fiddle), Andrew Waegel (Pedal Steel Guitar) and Dave Lang (Vocals, Guitar). Favorite songs for me personally are Think I Do, Birch Bones Redux and Something About The Moon. As soon as the album starts with the 1981 NED SUBLETTE cover Cowboys Are Frequently Secretly Fond Of Each Other you can hear Cindy has a lot of talent, both with her voice and playing the guitar. There is something unique going down here on this album, so I will not make any comparisons, and it's therefore best to check it out for yourself. The album is available through brokencloverrecords.bandcamp.com and more information can be found at: emchy.bandcamp.com
